“Give us today our daily bread”
Meditation 1: “Give” is Gracious
After making the glory of God this prayer’s primary importance, we are now led into supplication. Give is not a demand or a command. Give is the manner in which servants speak to their master. Our God is a gracious God and we are owed nothing.
This prayer both teaches us that we have a Father who provides and that we should petition Him for provision. When we pray God’s promises we can be confident that He will be faithful in answering. James instructs us to pray in faith (Jam 1:6-7) and without selfish intent (Jam 4:2-3). We can pray confidently in this way because God has promised provision.
