He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” - Genesis 3:1b

The practicality of this verse is not uncommon to any raised in the church. The major attack against God's people continues to be to doubt God's word (Matt 4:3). This should not be assumed to be a merely intellectual activity. It is not solely the liberal scholars who deny the authenticity of the Scripture and testimony of God.

James clarifies for us that it is not the hearing of God's word but the doing of God's word that in fact determines if we trust and belief in God's word (Jam 1:22-25). There are many who deny the inerrancy of Scriptures that nevertheless live the truth of the words. There are many who affirm the inerrancy of the Scriptures that have never lived the truth of the words. God describes them as definitively as can be accomplished (Isa 29:13). Let us not think we are defeating the serpent simply by calling the book "Holy" but instead by becoming holy (1 Pet 1:16).
