All in Culture

Church Calendars, National Calendars, & Hallmark Calendars

Individual choice, instant gratification, and sensory titillation are stalwarts in the American church because they are stalwarts in American secularism: the true enculturating power behind much of American Christianity. The church has been called to be a new world within the bounds of an old world. Yet we seem to content ourselves with the ways and world of the first Adam even while we are called to pray for the kingdom of the second Adam to come on Earth as it is in heaven.

Sluggish Imaginations

The task of our day, much like C.S. Lewis proposed in The Abolition of Man, is a recovery of the imagination. Modern culture has indoctrinated us from our earliest years that the world is a powerful and pointless machine that cannot be stopped. All too often we do not have the imaginative powers to overcome this lie. But the first step to overcoming all evils is to see the evil for what it is. Perhaps Christians will begin to heed the warnings of the likes of Eliot, Percy, and Lewis and question whether they have succumb to the numbness of Modernity and their imaginations too are sluggish.

We Should First Ask: "Which State"

In almost all modern discussions of the relationship between church and state the current political (statist) structure is assumed. This means that we must figure out how a church can relate to the existing structure of the state. What is hardly ever brought up in these discussions of the relationship of church and state is whether the state as we currently have is should be changed at its core.

through a glass, darkly

These are beers of such profound flavor, they deserve your undivided attention. Save these for after dinner, because with ABVs this high, you'll need to have food in your stomach or else you're going to be wobbling.

"You" Before "I"

The consequences are dire when the church adopts a modern/liberal anthropology to determine it’s ecclesiology and discipleship. Unfortunately, this is the case in all too many churches. In many places we have assumed that children are not bound relationally to the church until they have made a decision to bind themselves to Christ. But this is Enlightenment thinking and not Biblical thinking.

Unto the Glory of God

The goal for Christians should always be, first and foremost, to be Godly people no matter what systems they find themselves in. At the same time, Christians should never be content to allow faithlessness toward God to exist in systemic ways.

Interstellar, Relativity and the Age of the Earth

The Bible gives us God's account of the creation of the world. It took him seven days to do it. Are these days like the days we currently experience? Probably not. Are we even capable of putting the days of creation under our proverbial microscopes? Again, probably not. At this point I think humility is key.
