Torrey Gazette is the combined work of everyday Christians blogging on books, family, art, and theology. So pull up a seat and join us. Family Table rules apply. Shouting is totally acceptable.
I’d be willing to bet there are things unknown about my dearly beloved and myself. Hence this post. Eight pieces of wedded trivia for eight years of marriage; in honor of our eight-year anniversary this previous Tuesday, August 5th.
A separation of church and state is here proclaimed. But there is no call for a separation of religion and government. The Word of God speaks in Lordship over both.
Through the lips of a sinful preacher, the triune God is actually judging, justifying, reconciling, renewing, and conforming sinners to Christ’s image. God created the world by the words of his mouth and by his speech also brings a new creation into being. In other words, through the proclamation of his Word, God is not just speaking about what might happen if we bring it about but is actually speaking it into being. - Michael Horton
Jonah and the Great Big Fish passes the kiddo and adult test. It’s being added to a crowded bookshelf but it will never get read just once.
The NASB Skinii Bible provides one of the best English translations available in an attractive and accessible physical form. Though there are more inexpensive options, the Skinii Bible both looks and reads well. I expect this will become my go-to study and service Bible.
Christians often approach the topic in a brash reactive way in response to the gender twisting they see around them. Lewis approach seems much less brass yet no less clear.
Since listing books read each month is a thing, I’m trying my hand at it. As an advocate of literature and fiction, that’s what was imbibed. Thanks to a few weeks of couch surfing (morning sickness bliss) K and J were introduced to child-initiated play while I devoured novels: desperate attempts to escape
July is not yet done. But I won't be producing any more book reviews this month. So here was my month of reviews. A couple Bibles, a couple theology books and a whole lot of page turning.
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of the Lord of hosts in the day of his fierce anger. - Isaiah 13:13
All to often we treat salvation as some kind of substance that we are trying to get a hold of. The story of the Bible, as Chilton and Van Til highlight, speaks of salvation as a state of being. Moreover, salvation is a state of being that will be as expansive as the pervasiveness of sin.
We are not to lose hope because we are not to lose faith, and faith is the assurance of those things we are hoping for, the renewal of all things in Christ.
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. - Psalm 104:1-4
It was a false start with a great ending. Other kids may thrill to the touch of slime and overlook tempting food for art’s sake. But with kiddos like their mama, bring the spoons and bibs.
In conclusion, Essentials is one of the best study Bibles my eyes and hands have come across. While the NIV translation is not suitable for significant exegetical study, it does make for easy reading. The information provided from the wealth of Zondervan’s study Bibles makes for an outstanding basis of study into the Christian faith.
In conclusion, there are certainly Bibles that will offer more than the Value ESV but for those interested in a simple copy of God’s word there is hardly a better value purchase.
