Wedded Bliss

Our "first date" all dressed up to play putt-putt.

While some of you were present at our nuptials and most of our married lives, others of you are new to us and our union. In both cases, I’d be willing to bet there are things unknown about my dearly beloved and myself. Hence this post. Eight pieces of wedded trivia for eight years of marriage; in honor of our eight-year anniversary this previous Tuesday, August 5th.

Enjoy

 1. Although both fundamental Baptists at the time of our wedding, elements within the ceremony pointed to our future, aka current, adherence to more reformed, Presbyterian beliefs. For example: we took communion- in Latin (with real wine, not grape juice!). Our dads both officiated, and I persuaded my dad to learn enough Latin to administer the elements.

Our first trip overseas: Alicante, Spain at the city castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Scottish loch.

2. Prior to offspring our love for traveling birthed numerous trips, including international stints. We visited Spain, England, Scotland, the Netherlands and Canada as a couple. Separately we’ve both been to Mexico, but I win having also been to France, Morocco, and China.

 3. We married young (Joshua spent our first two married months as a teenager). Needless to say, things were often rocky. God’s providence saw us spending most of our second year living apart: Joshua in Austin with an internship and I in San Antonio with a full time job. The distance helped minimize trivial grievances and focus on our everlasting love!

Pittsburgh in the fall!

4. Matching tattoos. That’s right; Joshua and I have matching tattoos. I designed them, a whole note “sun” with two tied eighth notes in the center, a symbolic representation of our unity in God through Christ the son (by the power of the Holy Spirit is understood, but not inked).

5. We love to read. We love fantasy and sci-fi, including (but not limited to) Star Wars. Prior to matrimony I had seen the movies and read a few Timothy Zahn novels. Joshua had read, and owned every piece of literature produced in the extended universe. During our first year of marriage we would read a Star Wars novel together at night, until I was all caught up.

6. Once upon a time our stubbornness led us up approximately thirty flights of stairs, each lugging multiple bags (suitcase type). Scottish stairs in the old town of Edinburgh: steep, tiny, winding. Our faith in our directions stemmed from obstinacy and a mutual distaste for polite inquiry. Unfortunate for us, as upon reaching the top we were informed that our desired destination was two streets over…on street level.

7. Joshua and I have been wedding singers. A former co-worker and good friend asked us to sing a duet at her wedding, so we did.

8. Each of our kiddos had their umbilical cords cut by Joshua. Drunk with success, he is campaigning to deliver and catch this third one during an at-home birth. Unless Baby Torrey #3 comes at an ungodly hour in the middle of the night with no time to reach our birthing center, that isn’t happening!
