Bible Blogging Commentary: Genesis 1:20-23
And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. - Genesis 1:20-23
Similar in fashion to the previous days, God is now about the population of His order and creation. Spread across creation are the distinct orders established to thrive in their proper territory. The fish does not thrive in water out of self concern. The bird does take flight out of concern for self exaltation. No neither establishes themselves in their territory bu accept the dominion given them by God.
The whole created order blesses God. The created animals and their success in their domain brings glory unto God and His great wisdom. And within this system, God brings forth life and permits it to recreate. So that once again nothing in the order of creation can be responsible for the life of another order of creation.
Notice that the plants spring forth from the ground (Gen 1:12; BBC) and yet the animals are made by God. Life (e.g. blood) are derived solely from God. This pattern of increase to the provision of life will reach its climax on the sixth day and creation of man.
