Bible Blogging Commentary: Genesis 1:26-27

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them. - Genesis 1:26-27

The full weight of this day can only be understood when the proper mind has laid the pattern from day one. A new living creation is being brought forth by God. And this time it is given as a shadow of something greater. Man is created as the shadow (type) of God in creation. And this shadow is permitted dominion over all the things created. Everything that has been given life is placed under the authority of mankind. And mankind's authority rests not in his being the shadow but on being given the authority by God.

So the Father is over all things (1 Cor 11:3) and all things shall be returned to the Father (1 Cor 15:24-28).

Man is created! In the very "image of God" in a fashion to foreshadow the "image of the invisible God" (Col 1:15) in whom all fullness dwells (Col 1:19). But what is seen in the distinction of the following line? There is no time separation here for the creation of woman. Both together are given the image of God and both together are given the dominion. Neither one of the other but both together over creation. Like the waters separated from each other (Gen 1:6-7) so also are male and female separated for their roles. But they were created together in the mind of God.
