BBC: Psalm 8:1-4

1 O LORD, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

2     Out of the mouth of babies and infants,

you have established strength because of your foes,

to still the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

4 what is man that you are mindful of him,

and the son of man that you care for him?

This psalm is steeped in creation language. The covenant name of God (YHWH) is greater than creation. His glory is set above the heavens by His very hand. But the psalmist does not stop there; He strengthens Himself through the mouth of weak (v. 2).

There are many who refuse to acknowledge the participation of children in the kingdom of God. But David here testifies that they are the source of defeat for God’s enemies.  The amazement of the psalmist continues into the wonder of creation. So also we shouldn’t expect logic and rational thought to explain the amazing work of God through infants without special revelation.

This portion of the psalm concludes with the extravagance of God’s interest in man. After uplifting the glory of God, the feebleness of man is seen more clearly. Thankfully the psalmist will confirm the majesty of the Lord yet again in the Lord’s work through man.
