Bible Blogging Commentary: Genesis 1:14-19

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. - Genesis 1:14-19

On the fourth day God continues His work of providing light. After populating the earth with the life that spring from it, God works in the domain of the heavenly universe. Only now are the sources of the light established in the skies and given dominion over declaring the days. The appropriated authority of the "lights" is established by God to rule over that which relies on God alone.

It is well known that light does not indicate the start of day and night in every place on earth. Does this disprove the authentic nature of Scripture? No. The day is not spent to show the universal order but to reveal the source of the universal order. It is God who establishes and no other. Neither nature, man, the lights themselves or any other god can make claim to determine both the order and their masters. God alone reigns above creation.
