BCC: Ephesians 1:21-23
Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. – Ephesians 1:21-23
This passage has traditionally been interpreted as the rising of Christ above angelic, and in particular demonic, powers. This however is not as important as the phrase “in this age” and “the one to come.” Though this could refer to the current age and the coming eternal state, it is my opinion that this refers to pre and post AD 70 ages.
That Christ is head over the church has a profound impact on Paul’s theology of marriage (Eph 5:22-33). But here it is closely correlated to Christ’s resurrection. All things are under His feet now but also all things remain to be brought under His feet (1 Cor 15:24-25; Heb 1:13; 10:12-13). But it is in both these ages that Christ is truly above all in the power of the church (Rom 16:20).
