And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord. - Genesis 4:25-26 

This text brings the chapter to conclusion in much the way it started (Gen 4:1). Adam again “knows his wife” though this time her name is removed. The intimacy required for the fulfillment of God’s promises is a theme throughout the Bible until the virgin birth by Mary (Luke 1:34-35).

Seth‘s name reflects the “compensation” from God of a “offspring” to fulfill the promises in the garden (Gen 3:15). Cain no longer is considered a viable option for the Messiah and the placement of his genealogy shows this.

The text closes by focusing on the offspring of Seth. Enosh’s name means “man” and we see God restore the “line of men” through Seth. This speaks of the substitution and resurrection of Christ and the “new man” that is made of believers (Eph 2:15; 4:22-24).
