Bible Blogging Commentary: Genesis 1:28-31
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. - Genesis 1:28-31
Man and woman have been created. They have been given the image. Now they are given the dominion. The establishment of order throughout creation reaches the climax when all created things are to be subject to the image of God. The practicing of this dominion will falter and only being established in the perfect image, Jesus Christ.
But what does it mean to be His heirs? The very thing commanded here of the image bearers. Submissions of the animals belongs to man. The natural production of the earth belongs to man. God has given the creation of His image bearers are a gift. This gift was re-given to Noah (Gen 9:1-3). And this gift has been given in full realization to the seed of Abraham (Rom 4:13).
It is this order that makes creation very good. This is not a simple statement that what was made on the sixth day was very good but that now the whole created order had been elevated to very good because of order and dominion.
