Ligoner Day 3: Coffee, Ferguson & Sproul

Coffee was on the agenda again. No extra donuts this time.

Sinclair Ferguson - On This Rock

No introduction for the Scot today. Briefly Sinclair wants to discuss the church. So were did he begin? He "began at Adam." :-)

Ferguson was simple in his presentation but revealed a fascinating point. Despite the entire church being based on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christ Himself only spoke of the church once (Matt 16:13-20). Christ principally came to build the church and this is the culmination of Scripture. Christ principally came to build the church in enemy territory ("the gates of hell" meaning the center of its kingdom).

Q & A

Absolutely wonderful. Cal Thomas is a riot. Sinclair Ferguson sounds like he's watched Braveheart a couple too many times recently. I can only hope they allow streaming of this session soon. It will make you laugh and cry. It will move you! :-)

R.C. Sproul - No Compromise, No Surrender

I would venture that many would be capable of walking away from this message with little actually new knowledge. But the resounding echo of "Christ is Lord" is still reverberating even a day after arriving home. Starting with the martyrdom of Polycarp, Sproul emphasized the integrity and faithfulness to Christ by the church. Ending with the rejoicing of the disciples at the ascension of Jesus, Sproul pointed out in the logical inconsistency of "rejoicing" when the disciples had previously been sad over His departure. Why were they now happy? Because they now understood "Jesus is Lord."

"Pray for all the saints. Pray also for kings and powers and princes and for them that persecute and hate you and for the enemies of the cross, that your fruit may be manifest among all men, that ye may be perfect in Him." - Polycarp to the Philippians
