Don't be too functional. Leave space in your mind for the unexpected, so that when an opportunity appears, you can create space for it in your day. Be hospitable; be open. Can you value hospitality over personal achievement?
Never assume anything. Ask when you don't know. Better be embarrassed than ignorant. Do not allow yourself to project your own values onto others; others are worlds unto themselves, filled with their own presuppositions and constructs. But- do not reduce them to those. People are always more complex than their ideas.
Do not insulate yourself from risk. You have two goals in every endeavor: to succeed and to learn. You may fail the first but you will never fail the second.
Flee the tendency to walk around with eyes physically open, but mind unseeing. Wake, O sleeper! If your eyes are open your brain should be analyzing, appreciating, calculating, diagnosing, and absorbing. Engage the world with all of your might- sometimes loudly; sometimes softly. Like a singer, give every note spin.
Don't laugh at the threatening and don't threaten the laughable.
Don't kid yourself that you want to be kind when you really only want to be liked.
Do not grow weary of doing good. Seek out need. Never wait to be asked. There are so many places you can be useful, and it's next to impossible for you to be in all of them. So get busy?
Don't be afraid of what people think; don't pretend you'll live forever; don't wear clothes that hurt you. Embrace extremes: be strong and gentle, just and merciful, ambitious and content. And above all, give thanks.
